| NJ SHARES Teams Up With Online Charity Shopping Mall To Help Needy Families Pay Their Utility Bills
Ewing, NJ — October 14, 2003 — Can buying a book or computer
help a needy New Jersey family stay warm this winter? Yes, if the item
is bought through iGive.com and the proceeds are earmarked for New Jersey
Statewide Heating Assistance and Referral for Energy Services (NJ SHARES).
NJ SHARES is now collecting donations through iGive.com,
the first online charity shopping mall, to help pay the natural gas
and electric bills of New Jersey families experiencing a temporary financial
crisis. Donations are made when consumers do their everyday online shopping
through iGive.com. The website enables individuals to shop online at
hundreds of merchants and simultaneously support any charitable cause
they wish, including NJ SHARES. Up to 25 percent or more of every purchase
is donated to the selected cause at no extra cost to shoppers or causes.
iGive.com members have listed more than 15,000 causes on the site.
“We have found iGive.com to be an excellent and
nearly effortless way to raise needed funds. Many of our supporters
were already shopping online. Now with their shopping through the Mall
at iGive.com, everything they buy – from CDs, books, toothpaste
to computers – helps NJ SHARES,” commented Jim Jacob, executive
director of NJ SHARES. “We’re excited about the continued
funds this technology, and iGive.com, will enable our supporters to
raise for temporary utility bill assistance. In addition, iGive.com
helps us reach and build stronger relationships with our existing and
new supporters.”
Robert Grosshandler, founder and chief executive officer
of iGive.com, said, “iGive.com’s mission is to provide a
reliable, valuable, secure and easy-to-use tool to help individuals
support their favorite causes while doing their everyday online shopping.
We’re delighted that NJ SHARES is utilizing iGive.com and the
information age to help people in a temporary crisis. The causes benefit
from their supporters’ everyday shopping, and shoppers benefit
from the ability to help causes close to their hearts and homes.”
New Jersey SHARES is a statewide, non-profit 501(c) (3)
organization that provides grants to pay the utility bills of households
in need through a statewide network of 50 community-based social service
agencies. Its Board of Directors includes representatives of New Jersey's
seven electric and gas utilities; Verizon; non-profit groups including
The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, AARP, Association for Children
of NJ, Community Health Law Project and NJ Community Action Association;
and several at-large members. To get more information, please call 1-866-NJSHARE.
iGive.com is the Internet’s first venture for turning
online shopping into a vehicle for charitable giving. In addition to
supporting any cause they wish, users can also track, directly on the
site, their individual donations to their causes and the total amount
their causes have raised. iGive.com also offers shoppers a choice of
more online merchants than any other online charity mall. Since its
debut in 1997, iGive.com has raised more than $1,000,000 for thousands
of nonprofit organizations and worthy causes, ranging from animal shelters,
school marching bands, medical research foundations to women’s
shelters and missing children’s advocacy groups. For more information
