Communications Lifeline and Link Up America Program Featured at AARP New Jersey Event

AARP’s Tele-Town Hall Event, on Sept. 15, featured Verizon New Jersey’s Communications Lifeline and Link-Up America Program, which NJ SHARES administers. Communications Lifeline and Link-Up America are programs that offer families discounts on their monthly telephone bills and reductions in the installation fees for those who cannot afford to pay the connection charges. At the event, more than 100,000 AARP members heard about this and other important programs.

The AARP event aligned with the National Awareness of Communication Lifeline week. New Jersey has more than 100,000 low-income residents enrolled in Lifeline, many are already enrolled in social service programs such as SSI, Medicaid, PAAD, LIHEAP/HEAP, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families/Work First New Jersey (TANF), Food Stamp Program and others. NJ SHARES assists categorically eligible households that are experiencing enrollment issues as well as self-certifying low-income households. For assistance, call NJ SHARES at 1-888-337-3339 or visit

Executive Letter

This month marks two significant milestones for NJ SHARES’ involvement with critically needed water assistance programs: United Water Cares and New Jersey American Water H2O.

September is United Water Cares program’s five-year anniversary. In 2005, NJ SHARES teamed up with United Water New Jersey to create and administer an assistance program to help customers who, due to a temporary financial crisis, could not pay their United Water bills. Since its inception, the program has provided needy United Water customers with 2,381 grants. NJ SHARES is proud to have administered this valuable program, through our network of community agencies, for the last five years. More information about UW Cares can be found at NJ SHARES administers this program in eight other states for United Water.

NJ SHARES is also celebrating its first anniversary providing the administration for NJ American Water’s (NJAW) H2O To Help Others ProgramTM and the Low Income Payment Plan (LIPP), for NJAW households that are having difficulty paying their water bills. Since NJ SHARES has been administering the programs, we have provided 456 water assistance grants in the H2O program, and enrolled 1,092 households in the Low Income Payment Plan.

This month, NJ SHARES was also delighted to be part of the outreach for the National Telephone Discount Lifeline Awareness Week, recognized September 12-18. Telephone services are an essential part of keeping all of us safe and connected, and it has been a pleasure to work with the NJ Board of Public Utilities, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, Verizon New Jersey and AARP to draw attention to this worthy assistance program.

NJ SHARES, which began as an energy assistance program in 1998, is grateful to our network of agencies for giving us the ability to offer water and telephone assistance as well. Together, we are working to provide a holistic solution for our neighbors in need.

Best regards,

Jim Jacob
