PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Jim Jacob, President & CEO

Presidentís Message

As the holidays quickly approach, many of us look forward to spending time with family and friends and celebrating the season. However, many working families and senior citizens are facing difficult financial circumstances and are forced to make a choice between buying holiday gifts and heating and lighting their homes.

During this special time of year, as you think about how you might help others in your community, we hope you will consider making a gift to NJ SHARES.  Every gift will help to ease the burden for a neighbor who cannot afford heat, electricity or hot water because of a temporary crisis. The generosity of people like you helps seniors and families avoid the tragedies associated with not having life-sustaining utility services.

As 2016 draws to a close, I would like to recognize all of our generous donors, foundation and corporate supporters, partner agencies and friends.  We are truly grateful for your support. Your  contribution has helped us provide energy assistance to more than 181,900 households over the past 18 years. We thank you for your continued support, as we continue to work together to help our neighbors who are facing difficult circumstances and hardship.

I am pleased to announce that we have partnered with our long-term supporter, Atlantic City Electric (ACE), to create an additional electric assistance program for their customers.  Details about the ACE Helping Hands program, scheduled to begin in January 2017, are included in the newsletter. Thank you again, and warmest wishes for the holiday season and the New Year ahead.

Jim Jacob

Sharing Our Gratitude For Our Neighborhood HeroEs

Sun National Bank Donates $10,000 to Keep Utilities On for Struggling Households

As we approach the cold weather months, our partners at Sun National Bank are making it possible for NJ SHARES to keep more families safe and warm in their homes with a $10,000 energy assistance grant to help seniors and families living in Atlantic, Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Mercer counties.  NJ SHARES is grateful that Sun National Bank shares our commitment to the community. Their generous grant will help us to prepare for the heating season ahead.  We anticipate more households will be looking to us for help due to the unstable financial atmosphere coupled with the threat of a cold winter. The combination of these factors can cause an increased burden on families and individuals that will amplify the need for our program.

PNC Bank Foundation Donates $10,000 for Outreach

The PNC Bank Foundation will partner with NJ SHARES to raise awareness of our program  among seniors and families who need the help.  We will work together with the PNC Bank Foundation to connect communities with resources to build stronger neighborhoods.

We are grateful to PNC Bank Foundation for sharing our vision and understanding of the holistic approach to helping our neighbors.  The grant funding will   be used to support the NJ SHARES Community Outreach and Education program, which matches qualified applicants with our assistance programs.

According to an independent impact evaluation, 80 percent of households served by NJ SHARES are receiving help for the first time and were not aware that help was available to individuals or  families earning  more than 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

Events

NJ SHARES Attends Foreclosure Prevention Resource Event

NJ SHARES recently participated in the Foreclosure Prevention Resource Event sponsored by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA). The free event, held in West Windsor, welcomed all homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage to learn about federal funds available to prevent foreclosure.   Attendees had an opportunity to visit with housing counselors, industry representatives and local organizations offering helpful resources. NJ SHARES was on hand to talk about our utility assistance programs.

The two programs available through New Jersey’s Hardest Hit Fund (NJHHF) are:

New Jersey HomeKeeper offers eligible homeowners up to $48,000 in financial assistance to cover arrearages and/or monthly mortgage payments (including principal, interest, taxes and insurance) for up to 12 months.

New Jersey HomeSaver offers eligible homeowners up to $50,000 in financial assistance to help bring their household monthly payment to an affordable level through a refinance, recast, or permanent modification of the first mortgage loan.

NJSHARES Partners with Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Saint Peter Claver Conference Mother of Mercy Parish

NJ SHARES is fortunate to partner with more than 230 agencies around the state. Each organization has a different mission and focus but all provide holistic solutions to their community.  NJ SHARES is delighted to highlight our partnership with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Saint Peter Claver Conference Mother of Mercy Parish in Asbury Park.

“Over the years, NJ SHARES has partnered with 26 St. Vincent De Paul conferences throughout the state, said NJ SHARES’ Jim Jacob President and CEO.”  Mr. Jacob continued, “Working with passionate volunteers to expedite our mission is the heartbeat of our organization.  We value our partners and applaud them for providing the individual casework which results in assistance for struggling households to remain safe in their homes.”

“The Saint Peter Claver Conference Mother of Mercy Parish in Asbury Park has partnered with NJ SHARES since 2004, said Brenda Terrell, Vice President of the Conference. Ms. Terrell continued, “We discreetly aide needy individuals by making personal visits to homes and hospitals. Our assistance is not limited to financial aid, immediate needs of food, clothing, shelter and medical care as well as the underlying causes of the distress. We often work in conjunction with other churches and social service agencies in the area.”

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is an all volunteer Roman Catholic organization helping those who are in need, in a Spirit of charity and justice through person to person involvement. The society was founded in Paris France, in 1833, to provided assistance to the poor and suffering. They choose the great Apostle of Charity, St. Vincent de Paul as their patron. Today there are over 4,360 conferences with more than 141,000 Vincentians worldwide.
