“The extremely cold winter has placed a heavier burden
on our neighbors in need...”
A letter from President & CEO James M. Jacob
New Jerseyans shivered through another extremely cold winter leaving many dreaming of sunshine and warmth. We are now concerned for the many families that have struggled through the second consecutive dangerously cold winter only to carry their heating bill debt into the spring and beyond. We found that many households who could not afford their heating bills from the winter of 2014 went without utility service for most of the warm months that followed. To expedite assistance to households without utility service, NJ SHARES has recently instituted an Emergency Assistance Program.
A recent United Way study states that a family of four needs $61,200 to meet basic needs, and more than 1.2 million New Jersey residents (38%) fall below that threshold. Many of our neighbors are living pay-check to pay-check and a season like this one can burden a family budget to the breaking point. Many families have to choose between heating and eating. Here is a thank you we recently received from a client helped with our Emergency Assistance Program:
“Grown-ups can deal with not having utilities but it’s hard for children. I worried about the bath water being too cold and how I could cook for them. The house was cold and I was trying to keep the kids warm and healthy. I was amazed how quickly NJ SHARES was able to help us. We had our gas service restored the next day. I am so thankful to NJ SHARES and the donors that make their assistance possible.” — A grateful recipient from Egg Harbor
NJ SHARES is the safety-net for households who are not eligible for other forms of assistance. We have provided $71.8 million in grants, programs and outreach that has touched the lives of more than 178,600 families since 1998. This year, we will respond to an increased need from an extremely cold winter. Our neighbors will receive higher utility bills from the increased consumption due to the significant cold winter. They will try their best to pay their debts and we will try to help them. I hope that you will support NJ SHARES and consider making a contribution to help us address the greater burden our neighbors in need carry.
